Running and Lifting Weights

Running and Lifting Weights

After I quit smoking, I wanted to start incorporating running into my daily schedule.

I thought my body deserved it after all the cardiovascular punishment I put it through. Anyway, I knew that it was not a good idea to run just before lifting weight because it would drain my
energy resources. But I also thought that running after a heavy squat session also would hurt my gains. Could I run in the mornings, maybe? That also made no sense to me since I could barely spare time for gym. There is no way I am waking up at 5:15 AM to run. Potentially, I could run on my off-days?

So I came up with this solution. Instead of lifting weights 5 times a week, I would reduce it to 3 times a week. And run twice a week.

My old program looked like this,
Monday: Bench
Tuesday: Squat
Wednesday: Off
Thursday: Deadlift
Friday: Arms
Saturday: Back
Sunday: Off

After the modification,
Monday: Bench
Tuesday: Sprint
Wednesday: Deadlift & Back
Thursday: Long-Distance Run
Friday: Squat & Arms
Saturday: Off
Sunday: Off

Admittedly, I build up a little more fatigue towards the end of the week, but my reward is two full days of doin' nothing.

At this point, I need more frequency to add weight to the bar anyway. Compacting workouts together like this seems to hurt nothing. I basically get better at running while maintaining strength and contractile tissue.
