Abandoning Novice Linear Progression

Abandoning Novice Linear Progression

What to do then you can't add five pounds to your lifts anymore. Moving towards the ending of Starting Strength / Stronglifts (5x5) and what to do when you hit a wall.

With "Starting Strength" trainees can start with any weight, an empty bar if they have to and from there they add 5 or 10 pounds each training session. For most people, they end up having to grind out the last rep or even start failing sets within a month or so. They will start operating at very close to their five-rep maximum. And for a while, it works. Because the weights they lift are not that heavy hence its name "Novice" Linear Progression.

Once a trainee reaches the point of constant he/she usually chooses to switch programs. Most likely something like 5/3/1 and can continue to make progress. Because they're not forced to add weight to the bar once every other day.

If you wish to maintain a high-frequency approach, you might drop the weight quite considerably and increase training volume. Increased training volume at sub-max weights means that you lift lighter to train but when you attempt a PR you can pull it off.

Like many free and famous training templates, programs like Starting Strength and 5/3/1 can be found online, you can just google them. They're quite self-explanatory and simple.

There are variations to these programs, of course, I refer to originals.
